A former NHL goaltender, NHL goaltending coach, and Olympic silver Medallist, Corey Hirsch was featured in an article in the Players Tribune opening up about his struggle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder while on the rise to a promising career in the NHL. He has since Dedicated himself to ending the stigma of mental health and becoming the National Youth Ambassador for the Center for Addiction and Mental Health. Hirsch helped to create and put together the program CAMH program Gamechangers, geared to get mental health info into the hands of our youth.

Born in Medicine Hat, Alberta and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Corey was drafted in 1991 by the New York Rangers. He spent three years of his early career with New York where he was an active roster member when the team won the 1994 Stanley Cup. In April of 1995 he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks where he played the majority of of his NHL games all while hiding and battling a mental illness

After retiring from active play, Hirsch became an NHL goaltending coach for elite NHL goaltenders and prospects for another six seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and St Louis Blues. Corey has since transitioned from NHL coach to broadcaster where he currently works for Sportsnet650 as the radio color analyst covering the Vancouver Canucks.

Hockey Career

Corey was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. Recruited by the Kamloops Blazers he moved to Kamloops, B.C. at the age of 16 to begin his career playing in the WHL. He was drafted by the New York Rangers in 1991. After a steller 4 year WHL career, in 1992, Corey and the Kamloops Blazers won the city and organization their first ever Memorial Cup. 

The following season, in 1992-93, Corey turned professional, and he played for the New York Rangers' AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Rangers. He was honored with the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award, as the top goaltender in the league, and the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award for the lowest goals-against-average. He also debuted in the NHL for the Rangers during this season. 

In 1994 Corey was loaned to the Canadian National team. It was there during the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Corey represented his country as one of Team Canada's goaltenders, and the team finished 2nd losing in a dramatic shootout to Sweden, and took home a Silver Olympic Medal. 

In 1995 Corey was traded from the New York Rangers to the Vancouver Canucks where he was named to the 1995 NHL All Rookie team. He spent parts of 4 seasons with Vancouver then bounced around the NHL making stops in Nashville, Washington, and Dallas. 

After retiring from hockey Corey, became the goaltending coach for all of Hockey Canadas goaltending. It was there where he had the opportunity to Coach Carey Price and win 2 World Junior Gold Medals. He later became Goaltending coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and then the St. Louis Blues.

Corey is an NHL television broadcaster with Rogers Sportsnet, Corey Hirsch can be seen giving his expertise on Hockey Night in Canada, National and Regional broadcasts, as well as radio hosting and co-hosting. As an expert analyst, it is necessary for Corey to possess a vast knowledge of all 30 NHL teams and share his perspective about the games. Coaching

Corey has a proven track record of coaching and developing Elite NHL goaltenders and prospects. With over 22 years of experience coaching goaltenders and playing professional hockey, Corey's knowledge is incredibly valuable. A successful coach, Corey most recently was with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and St. Louis Blues.While coaching with St. Louis, Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott shattered franchise records and set NHL records. He can be credited with his strong involvement in developing two high-end goaltending prospects in Ben Bishop and Jake Allen, both of whom are currently playing in the NHL. Ben has gone on to be nominated for a Vezina, and has just recently taken the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2015.   

Hirsch has also been a Goaltending Consultant with Hockey Canada. In this role, he spent a lot of time in Finland and Sweden learning goaltending ideaologies and techniques with the Heads of their National Goaltending programs, Hannu Nykvist (Finland) and Thomas Magnusson (Sweden). Finland and Sweden are leaders in developing some of the best goaltenders in the world, and this experience even further strengthen's Hirsch's expertise. He is a two-time World Junior Gold medalist as a coach with Hockey Canada.
